OC Marathon 2012

O C Marathon, Sunday, May 6, 2012. The start line for the OC Marathon is down the street from the Newport Channel Inn at the Fashion Island shopping mall in Newport Beach.

Start time is 5:30 a.m. for the Full Marathon and 6:15 for the Half Marathon. The 5K walk/run start line is at the OC Fairgrounds, which is the finish line for the Full Marathon and the Half Marathon. The 5K start time is 7:30 a.m.

The Full and Half Marathon courses begin with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean and wends its way through the seaside village of Corona del Mar, and includes cliff side views of Big Corona del Mar State Beach. They continue past the Newport Harbor Yacht Clubs and multi-million dollar bayside homes and yachts. Newport Beach’s Back Bay comes next, with exceptional water and wildlife views of the Upper Newport Bay Estuary Reserve. The Half Marathon then heads to the OC Fairgrounds finish line while the Full Marathon course leaves Newport Beach for Costa Mesa, passing by the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, South Coast Plaza, and onto the Santa Ana River Trail before the home stretch towards the OC Fairgrounds.

The 2012 Newport Beach Film Festival begins April 26 and runs daily through May 3, 2011. Lots of movie stars and celebrities are coming to town! Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade 2011

Come join us for this traditional annual parade – now in its 103nd year. It gets bigger every year with nearly a million viewers and is a delight to visitors of all ages. The New York Times named Newport Beach’s boat parade as “one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation”, Yahoo Travel awarded Newport Beach the #2 spot in the U.S. for Holiday Lights (just ahead of Disney World and just behind New York City!), and Frommer’s Travel voted Newport Beach into the “Top Ten World’s Best Holiday Lights”.

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade offers a dazzling array of holiday lights, on both the massive line of brightly decorated boats and yachts wending their way through the harbor and on the countless elaborately adorned houses along on the shoreline.

In 2011, the parade will take place on five consecutive nights, from Wednesday, December 14 through Sunday, December 18, starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending at approximately 9:00 p.m. nightly. On the final night, there will be a spectacular fireworks display at 9 p.m.

To view the parade, you can reserve a table at one of many bayside restaurants (reserve way ahead!), or board one of the many charter cruise boats to see it up close (also reserve ahead), or simply stake out a comfy spot (with lots of blankets and hot chocolate) somewhere along the parade route. One of our favorite places is along the sidewalk around Balboa Island, where you can see the parade coming and going multiple times and you can stroll along and view the decorated homes and listen to the carolers and performers along the way. Headlining the entertainment Friday is Multi-Platinum rock legend Joan Jett, Saturday is the Grammy nominated Barenaked Ladies, and Sunday is both ABBA: The Concert with members of the original ABBA band, and pop/dance star Taylor Dayne.

The annual Surf City Marathon takes place Sunday, February 6, 2011, just down the street from the Newport Channel Inn. OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party

What may be the biggest New Year’s Eve party in California takes place at the nearby OC Fairgrounds. Four decades worth of tribute bands, including The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Journey, Depeche Mode, Morrissey/The Smiths, Oingo Boingo, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and U2 will jam on one of four live concert stages.

Live DJs will keep the dance floors hopping with today’s biggest party tracks and you can grab the mic yourself on a huge karaoke stage. Yellow Cab is sponsoring the official “New Year’s Bash” Demolition Derby (so that’s where all the old taxicabs go!), and fifty of California’s favorite gourmet food trucks are set to feed the crowd. At midnight, 12 “lucky” contest winners will ring in the New Year while riding the Super Shot Free Fall ride.

The OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party will be held on December 31, 2010 at the OC Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa, California. World of Jenks, MTV, U. S. Open of Surfing episode

The “World of Jenks” television episode entitled “Me and My Surfboard” is currently airing on MTV. Host Andrew Jenks and his film crew stayed at the Newport Channel Inn this summer while spending a week filming professional surfer Anastasia Ashley prepare for and compete in the U. S. Open of Surfing competition.

The U. S. Open of Surfing is the biggest surfing competition in the world and takes place each summer just up the beach from the Newport Channel Inn, near the Huntington Beach Pier. This event draws tens of thousands of fans and the world’s best surfers, including many that stay at the Newport Channel Inn during the competition.

The episode begins with Jenks, a New York City boy, wondering what it is like to be a surfer. Anastasia Ashley, rated among the top 50 female pro surfers and recent winner of the Pipeline Pro Competition, is filmed being interviewed by Surfer Magazine and Surfline.com, and offers very candid responses to Jenks' questions. She tries her best to teach Jenks to surf. The episode is an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the challenge of competitive surfing, and the artful filming makes you long for “a day at the beach”. Volcom DAMN AM Skateboard Contest, October 21 – 24, 2010

Volcom’s 4-day event of street skateboarding competition begins Thursday, October 21 with practice and registration followed by 3 days of competition, with the semi-finals, finals, and best trick event on Sunday, October 24. The DAMN AM contest is fun to watch and the admission is free for spectators, everyone is welcome. Food and drinks are free too! Volcom knows how to put on an event!

They close off two city blocks for the event and set up a huge stage for entertainment.
