US Open of Surfing 2012
The US Open
of Surfing begins Saturday, July 28, 2012 and qualifying rounds continue all
week, with the semi-finals and finals of the Pro Men’s event and Pro Women’s
event taking place on Sunday, August 5, 2012.
The world’s best surfers are expected to compete, and include big name
surfing legends Kelly Slater, Julian Wilson, and 2-time champion Brett Simpson in
the Men’s event, and current World Champion Carissa Moore and five-time World
Champ Stephanie Gilmore in the Women’s event.
The Pro Junior semi-finals and finals take place a day earlier on
Saturday, August 4, 2012. The event is
sponsored by Nike, Hurley, and Converse, and includes a weeklong skateboarding
championship in the nearby skate bowl and huge festival on the beach.
This premier surfing
competition takes place next to the Huntington Beach Pier, just down the street
from the Newport Channel Inn. Stadium
seating has been constructed on the beach for the event and thousands of
spectators are expected to attend.

The National
Resource Defense Council has issued a report placing Newport Beach among only 3
beaches in California that earned the top “5 Star” rating for outstanding water
quality, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Newport Beach Summer Concert Series
The 2012 Newport
Beach Summer Concert Series continues throughout the summer with a terrific
line-up of jazz and contemporary musicians.
The concerts take place every
Friday night through October. All shows begin
at 8 p.m. so the music begins as the sun sets.
We were
delighted to see the great Lee Ritenhour during the first concert of the season
and the evening was amazing. The venue
is a cozy intimate outdoor amphitheater on the grounds of the Newport Beach
Hyatt Regency (Tickets: 949 360-7800).
There is a wine bar at the venue and a full bar inside the hotel. Bring something warm to wear as a cool breeze
shows up after dark.
