US Open of Surfing 2013

The US Open of Surfing begins Saturday, July 20, 2013 and qualifying rounds continue all week, with the semi-finals and finals of the Pro Men’s event and Pro Women’s event taking place on Sunday, July 28.  The world’s best surfers are expected to compete, and include big name surfing legend Kelly Slater, Dane Reynolds, and defending 2012 champion Julian Wilson in the Men’s event, and current ASP Women’s World #1 Tyler Wright, local favorite Courtney Conlogue, and defending 2012 champion Lakey Peterson in the Women’s event.  The Pro Junior semi-finals and finals take place a day earlier on Saturday, July 27.  The event is sponsored by Vans, and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), and includes weeklong skateboarding and BMX championships in the nearby skate bowl and a huge festival on the beach.  All events are free and open to the public.

This premier surfing competition takes place next to the Huntington Beach Pier, just down the street from the Newport Channel Inn.  Stadium seating has been constructed on the beach for the event and thousands of spectators are expected to attend.  Overnight stays should be booked ASAP as availability is disappearing fast!

NSSA Newport Beach Surf Event November 3 – 4

The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA), a youth organization that promotes excellence in competitive surfing and high academic achievement among its members, will hold their annual surf competition in Newport Beach at 54th street just across from the Newport Channel Inn on November 3 and 4, 2012. 

The beach at 54th Street is considered one of the best surfing spots in California. It is also one of the cleanest beaches in California, earning one of only three top “5 Star” highest rated outstanding water quality beaches for Cleanest Beach in California  from the National Resource Defense Council.  Stay at the Newport Channel Inn that weekend and check out the up-and-coming surfing talent.

Newport Beach receives Highest Rating for Cleanest Beach in California

The National Resource Defense Council has issued a report placing Newport Beach among only 3 beaches in California that earned the top “5 Star” rating for outstanding water quality, according to the Los Angeles Times.
